I’ve just recently gotten into vinyl and this was recommended to me by a friend who is an “officianado.” I was dubious because Steely Dan has always seemed a bit pretentious and snooty when I hear it on the radio. But I ordered the album based on his promise that I wouldn’t regret it.
Let me say, he was completely correct. This album is a revelation on vinyl. I will use words like sumptuous, voluptuous, rich, velvety...does that sound like I’m describing expensive chocolate? It’s an apt metaphor.
The care, craft, and technical skill that went into this album is very apparent. As I listened I just could not believe how gorgeous the layers of harmony and instrumentation were.
I gave my dad a call to ask him if he’s ever heard it. He laughed and said that for several years after this came out you’d hear it in every high end audio store as a technical demo for their speakers and record players. He said it was everywhere.
So in closing, I’ll say this; I’m not an effete jazz expert or someone that enjoys music so that I can feel superior to others. I like what I like. That might mean Beethoven or that might mean Poison, I’m not worried about how it represents my tastes, I just like to enjoy things that sound good to me. On Vinyl this is hands down my favorite album and easily the one I listen to the most often. Do yourself a favor and add this to your collection and enjoy.

Re-issued LPs from major music labels are often a hit-or-miss experience in terms of quality control. But the 2010 180-gram vinyl re-issue of Steely Dan''s "Aja" is a real gem. The LP surface was smooth and clean and throughout the entire album, there was no more than 3 very, very faint "ticks". The overall sound quality compared to my CD of the same album was actually more dynamic with crisp, fast & airy treble attack with tight bass (especially on kick drums passages) and 3-dimensional stereo imaging. All these great qualities exist against a velvety silence that makes this LP absolutely outstanding. Even the all-too-common problem of an off-centered spindle hole didn''t exist on one side (the other side was very slightly off-centered) so pitches were audibly rock steady compared to average quality LPs. Many other current re-issues suffer from severely off-centered spindle holes.

The extremely high quality pressing may be explained by the particular label. In this case, it is Universal UK instead of the US Division. The British are much more serious about vinyl than Americans are. In fact, vinyl sales exceed music streaming sales there.

In any case, it goes without saying that the unique artistic expression of this album is captivating. "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Peg" & "Josie" are all well-known pop songs with jazz elements in sophisticated arrangements. The extremely good sound quality of this 2010 vinyl re-issue is a very pleasant surprise and is more than icing on the cake.

Great stuff!

If I could only have one SD record this would be it. Vinyl was the way it was meant to be heard, along with some good quality mid to late 70''s stereo gear. My wife gifted me their complete boxed sed on cd but I prefer this format. The stereos they make now are simply garbage compared to the Sansui''s Marantz''s or Kenwood''s made in the 70''s. While my expensive surround sound gathers dust my 38 year old stereos kick butt.

Aja is one of my favorite albums. All my Steely Dan albums make that list so I guess I''m a fan! Aja was originally released in 1977 andwas Steely Dan''s first album to go platinum, This remastered version only has subtle differences to my aging ear. I was pleased with the original vinyl and mine is, by any measure, well worn out. Getting this CD brings back the music and auto-rip saves me time gettign it onto my mobile devices. Nice!

I like every one of the 7 songs though I have some favorites: Aja, Black Cow, Deacon Blues, and Peg. They are all great songs in a jazz-rock fusion that Steely Dan mastered and dominated. What impresses me is how well their music (not just Aja) has held up over time. Even now 40 years later it still sounds fresh and connected.

One of the interesting things about Steely Dan for me is Michael MacDonald who went back and forth from Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. He is on two songs in this album: Peg and I Got The News. It seems to me that MacDonald''s work leaves a definite fingerprint on everything he touches. AND that''s not a bad thing in my opinion.

Aja is one of those "must have" albums and certainly one of the greatest albums of all time. It should be obvious I''m giving it 5 stars. It''s always good to listen to Steely Dan and Aja is one of their best.

Absolutely dead silent background, ZERO noise in the lead-in, runout grooves, or between tracks. Dynamic, punchy mastering. Super detailed, stunning resolution. I can''t get over how good this is, it''s jaw dropping.

Disregard the reviews complaining of skipping unless you have a $50 plastic turntable from Walmart, then I guess pay attention to them. 180g records with super dynamic passages will not play correctly unless you have a nice turntable.

This is a word-of-mouth album that rock (and jazz) lovers mature into - meaning that after you''ve grown tired hearing the same Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones albums, it''s Aja you''ll find yourself replaying the most on your turntable. I''ve been listening to the album for years and I still find new things with each listen! Funky, jazzy, bluesy, and excellent mood music - it''s Steely Dan''s best

This 180 gram reissue is just fantastic! I remember having this on cassette back in the day, and I have to say that hearing it on vinyl, was like hearing it for the first time. The quality is superb. No pops or skips and hardly any hiss. My setup is an Audio Technica LP120, Harmon Kardon receiver and Infinity/Sony speakers. The sax just sings on this album and the bass is very tight and not booming. Simply a must have for anyone wanting to hear what great engineering sounds like.

I am a recording engineer, and Steely Dan''s "Aja" has always been one of the artists we use to test sound setups. I embraced CDs early, but this hunk of 180g vinyl almost has me convinced that vinyl is indeed superior. I''m gonna try and get all my new records from these guys. Oh, and it comes with an MP3 download through BTBV''s site.

My only complaint is the MP3 is 320. It is lossy, but I bought this for the vinyl and I''m totally pleased with that!

The best band in the world. Everbody knows this. Pretzel Logic was their defining moment, peerless and popular. I can follow that particular chain of thought, it’s gorgeous. My personal favourites are Countdown and Royal Scam. There was a quantum leap in the quality of sound and arrangement, between Thrill and Countdown, of course. This album, to me, shares more with Kind Of Blue, in terms of atmospherics and virtuosity. It’s been haunting me for weeks. Not played the vinyl yet, but I’ve been bombarding my amp with the amazon bluetooth signal from my phone. Yes, and it saddens me to admit this, like Wasp Star and Countdown To Ecstasy, occasionally the weaker tracks start to pall, but this is a solid, infinitely listenable piece of work and, for me, their best. Gaucho was a fine album, by anybody’s standards, but I think their search for new sounds finally wore them down. Aja has jazz, disco, rythm and blues and infectious pop. It is also their darkest album. When pop culture was changing forever (endless recycling, complete denial of the past masterpieces that informed later work), Steely Dan threw this into the mix and gave things a good old stirring. Prefab Sprout and latter-day Little Feat were certainly listening. I’m so glad to have this in my collection once more. P.S. Just playing the vinyl...pristine quality. I don''t remember it ever sounding quite so remarkable. I used to have a 31" waist in 1977. I might have ballooned a bit in the intervening decades (hmmmph!), but this sounds as tight, fresh, bouncy and beautiful as ever.

I took a risk on this album as I have heard of Steely Dan but I have never listened to any of their material. And as I buy a lot of records Amazon for some reason keeps recommending this one. I have to say years before this I fell in love with Donald Fagen "Nightfly" but I have never listened to the band that he was in. Every track on this album is brilliant the musicianship just shines through and the laid back summery feel of the album is just a joy to listen to. Its got a great mix that albums of the ''70s that were done in California have lade back open and the mix is very warm. There is simply not a bad track on this album and if you are looking for music to take a risk on this is one to have a serious look at I highly recommend it as the tunes have been going through my head for weeks. Even a band of 90''s laid back hip-hop have sampled this band.

My origin vinyl of Aja was not in great condition after years of playing; so I went for this new heavier weight (180gm) version from the ''Back to Black'' series, which sounds superb. I could have done without the heavier duty cardboard gatefold, but the images and content are completely true to the original. Aja is perhaps Fagen and Becker''s smoothest album, by which I mean beautifully produced, using some top of the range session musicians, such as Victor Feldman, Larry Carlton and Bernard Purdie. Some lovely ''pop songs'' like ''Josie'' (dark lyrics though) and some much deeper offerings such as ''Home At Last'' - Homer eat your heart out!

An excellent high quality recording which feels a little cold. As with the later Steely Dan recordings this feels cold and distant. Worth getting if your Hi-Fi will do it justice. The redeeming feature of the overall recording is the sound of the saxophone, an instrument which seems to be falling out of favour. I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity – very clear, good definition, no muddiness • Channel separation – excellent good use of left, right and centre • Channel balance – Excellent, instruments clearly placed and identifiable on left, right or centre. The channel balance is stable and not used as a gimmick. • Sound Stage – the sparse instrumentation on some tracks leaves nowhere to hide. The sound stage is simple but broad, clear and elegant • Distortion – non audible • Compression – non audible • Atmosphere – there is a reasonable frequency range but despite the excellence of the recording it is not the most atmospheric with little feeling of “presence” • Bass – low frequencies – bass guitars and drums are tight and well defined but the bass drum is a little “soft and soggy” • Treble – high frequencies – on the whole very good, the stand out instrument is the piano on AJA which is superb • Vocals – excellent, clear and well defined As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse. Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.
